Geocache Description:

A Multi that will take you on an interesting walk around York visiting statues and plaques.

If the Ouse is in flood – you can not complete this Multicache

The route of the Multi is highlighted on the map and at each point of interest you will need to gain one number to find the final cache. You could also use this to plot other York caches that can be found on or near this route.

Co-ordinates for the final location are:
N 53 AB.CDE
W001 FG.HIJ

The listings co-ordinates are to identify a convenient start point for the walk and there is a plaque here – but it's a bit boring so just head off to:

1. N53 57.706 W001 04.890
Here you will see the statue of a Roman Emperor and a Roman Column (can you spot which way up it is?).

This Emperor was the son of Emperor Constantius. He was proclaimed the new Emperor in York (but not Rome) and he was a man who went on to change the world. Constantinople, or Constantine's City (Istanbul) was his new and Christian Rome. His support for Christianity led to it becoming the religion of Western Europe.

A = The number of toes you can actually see on the Emperor's left foot. For now you cannot see the statue due to street work so the answer is 5 (1/2/13)

To get to the next place (a short walk away) you will pass by the Minster Gates and the Rose Window and you need to go to:

2. N53 57.725 W001 05.003
At this place you will see a Blue Plaque commemorating a famous person's birth place. This person was baptised at St Michael's le Belfry. This church is open to the public whenever the doors are open and if you have the time it is worth popping in.

G = The number of body parts on 31/01/06 This plaque was taken away but a replacement is displayed in the pub windows

Head off via High Petergate and pass point No. 3 on the map. Looking up to your Left you will see the plaque in the this picture

This is a fire insurance certificate used in the early 1800s by private Fire Services. There are two other certificates to the right of the one pictured and they can be found in a few other places around the City. Walk through Bootham Bar, upon which William Wallace's head was displayed in 1305 (allegedly) Progress onto:

4. N53 57.764 W001.05.152
Here is the statue of William Etty erected in 1911. William Etty (1787-1849), born in York, was an English painter best known for his paintings of nudes.

Standing in front of the water feature facing the statue turn to 4 o'clock and you will see a plaque on the wall next to the arch.

E = Double the number of days the dignitary was a guest of the Lord Abbot.

Travel now, a short walk to:

5. N53 57.718 W001 05.152
This is a piece of the original Roman Wall.

F = the single number before the letter A.

To get to the next stage you need to travel South over the river to:

6. N 53 57.548 W001 05.397

This is the statue of George Leeman.
Born in York in 1809, articled to a York solicitor, Leeman established a very successful legal practice in 1835. An Alderman of the city for 28 years he was elected Lord Mayor on three occasions and was a Member of Parliament for York between 1865 and 1880. In these roles he was a staunch defender of Yorks’ antiquities and pushed through the restoration of much of the city walls.

Yet it was his impact on the railways that was his greatest legacy. In 1849 he succeeded George Hudson as Chairman of the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway and promoted the mergers which created the North Eastern Railway Company in 1854. The North Eastern, with its headquarters in York, became one of the wealthiest railways in the country and he was chairman from 1874 to 1880.

For many years there has been a rumour that the body of the statue is Hudson's and Leeman's head was added at the last minute when Hudson fell from grace!

D = The number of letters in the first word of the inscription on the base at the back of the statue.

From here you need to go down Rougier Street and go to:

7. N 53 57.445 W001 05.205

Here is some more information on the Hudson Story.

B = the number of signs on the green post across the road.

I = one less than the number of times the King was Mayor

A short walk to Ouse bridge and location:

8. N 53 57.441 W001 05.065

Here is some information about a famous daughter of York but more can be found if you visitGC19YFN

J = The number of letters in the first word on the inscription.

You will have two options to get to the next point – go over the bridge and go down the stairs to Kings Staith or go over the bridge and follow the road to the right, either way you need to go to:

9. N53 57.416 W001 04.929

There should be a blue plaque here celebrating the life of a comedian of York (Titter ye Not!)

On the wall opposite the blue plaque is another inscription – regarding a Memorial Stone...

C = the number of letters in the 4th word minus the number of letters in the 6th word.

Now on to the last location:

N53 57.338 W001 04.781

This large silver plaque gives a brief history of Clifford's Tower.

H = Seven times the cost of the land in whole £s.

where the answer is more than one number keep adding single numbers together to attain a single number; e.g. £25x7= 175, 1+7+5=13, 1+3=4

So now you have all the co-ords for the final cache – good luck. When you get to the cache please retrieve leaving the lid in place (this is to stop it floating away in times of high water). You will see what we mean when you get there. Please note do not look at ground level for this cache

Congratulations Joint FTF: Star-fish and Camera Man, well done to the Yorky cachers
