Geocache Description:

De wijk Nieuw Gent - UZ bevindt zich ten zuiden van de historische stad.
Tot in de 20ste eeuw kende dit gebied een landelijk voorkomen met erg verspreide bewoning,
naast een kleine arbeiderswijk uit de 19e eeuw aan de Gestichtstraat.
Einde achtttiende eeuw werd het kerkhof van Sint-Pieters naar het terrein,
aan de Noendries buiten de toenmalige stad- verplaatst.
De tracés van de Noendries, de Ottergemsesteenweg en allicht ook de Zwijnaardsesteenweg,
gaan terug op een oude landweg.
De De Pintelaan loopt waar voorheen de eerste spoorlijn Gent-Kortrijk liep.
De aanleg van de Ringvaart (1950) sneed het gebied af van Zwijnaarde,
en vormt meteen de huidige grens van de wijk - Nieuw Gent - UZ.
Het Universitair Ziekenhuis neemt een belangrijke plaats in de wijk in.
De eerste ontwerpen voor de inplanting van het Universitair Ziekenhuis dateren van de jaren dertig.
De gebouwen werden in gebruik genomen vanaf de jaren vijftig,
sindsdien breidde het complex zich stelselmatig uit.
Tussen de jaren twintig en vijftig van vorige eeuw werden in de huidige buurt Steenakker een groot aantal sociale woningen gebouwd.
In het begin van deze periode werd ook het scholencomplex van Sint-Aloïs gebouwd.
De verstedelijking van de wijk kwam volop op gang na de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
In de jaren zeventig, ten slotte, ontstond een nieuwe,
grote sociale woonwijk ten westen van de Zwijnaardsesteenweg: Nieuw Gent.

The area New Ghent - UZ is located south of the historic city.
Until the 20th century, this area is very rural with scattered settlements occur,
