History of Bristol-Witches Rock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Great Outdoors: All the logs seem to think this is a dangerous spot for a cache-it's too bad as the history of the road is great but don't want anyone getting hurt.

Geocache Description:

This is the third in a planned series of caches highlighting little-known historical spots around town. Bristol was founded in 1785 and has a long and interesting history. We were amazed to find out some of these facts and thought it would be fun to place caches in these areas. Unfortunately, a lot of cache locations are located near busy streets or shopping centers. The cache location was placed as close to the historical spot as possible but keeping in mind safety issues.

This cache is placed near Witches Rock Road. According to legend, there was a witch who showed her displeasure towards a farmer named Elijah Gaylord by casting a spell which would make his cart become separated from his team of oxen everytime he rode past a certain rock.
Placement of this cache was a little difficult as this is a residential street. We thought the legend was so interesting that we used a little "geocaching discretion" and placed the cache a little farther down the road from where the rock is located.
PLEASE USE CAUTION. THIS ROAD IS VERY BUSY. DON'T HAVE SMALL CHILDREN WITH YOU, DON'T DO AT NIGHT OR DUSK OR BAD WEATHER. It might be better to park at nearby Cedar Pit Road and walk over to the cache.
If anyone has an old History of Bristol book, the rock is pictured on page 132.
Bring your own pen and use caution and discretion. The neighbors across the street seem to know what is going on with all the people stopping here and don't seem to mind or bother anyone.
