Geocache Description:

An island on Long Lake in Valparaiso, Indiana. Only accessible by foot during ice fishing season, and accessible only by boat during the thawed season.

Featured on ESPN.com as a premier ice fishing spot, Long Lake in Valparaiso, Indiana is a fishing hot spot in the winter. With marshes, swamps, and islands, Long Lake is an advanced geocacher’s dream.

My “Islands in the Stream” geocache is on the large island, which is accessible by foot in the winter months, and only accessible by boat in the thawed season. Please use caution in both instances.

There is a public boat launch and parking lot on the west side of the lake, which parks about 12 cars. You can park here all year round.

If you are standing on the boat launch facing the island and you walk directly to it, that is where the geocache is. The location is tricky, as the trees and dead leaves offer good camoflauge, even with the geocache's white top.

You may see a couple of "no trespassing" signs. Lee, who helped me place this geocache, is the overseer of the island, and geocachers have been given permission to walk on the island as long as no litter is left behind and no vandalism takes place.

Once you reach the island, the terrain is relatively simple to navigate. Children have gone with us to the island both by boat and during winter months with little difficulty. Care should be used and very small children may not be suited for this terrain.

Someone started building a cabin on this island, but never finished. There is a foundation of a house as well as a toppled stone chimney.

Contents include a copy of "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck, Aquarius Barbie complete with display stand, a special mix CD with songs about islands, and flower seeds.

Good Luck!
