Geocache Description:

This is the description of a puzzle cache.  The cache is not at the posted coordinates. You'll need to solve the puzzle below to learn the actual coordinates.

This puzzle is designed to be solved in tandem with Saints and Sailors, which is a puzzle cache in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Unless you're prepared to make two round trips to Utah, we suggest that you enlist a partner in Utah to find Saints and Sailors while you find Sailors and Saints.  We prefer that you partner with someone who hasn't already solved the puzzle.

You should be able to find a partner by posting a note at Saints and Sailors or by searching for geocaching groups online.  The two of you will be visiting historic monuments and doing a bit of arithmetic.

Monument 1

The first monument is located at the posted coordinates, where you must find the answers to these two questions:

(U) How many kittles are part of this monument?

(V) In what year was the subject of the monument given to the Oregon Historical Society?

This will give you two numbers, U and V.  Your partner in Utah will also be visiting a monument to learn two numbers, A and B.  The two of you should share your numbers.

Monument 2

The second monument is (.008 × U) + (.054 × B) minutes north and (.012 × V) - (1.755 × A) minutes east of the first monument.  At the second monument answer two more questions:

(W) As you stand near the statue, how many inverted-U-shaped openings are in the wall halfway surrounding you?

(X) What was the cost, in thousands (knock the last 3 zeros off the full cost), to build the Prom?

This will give you two more numbers, W and X.  Your partner in Utah will be visiting a second monument to learn C and D.  The two of you should share your numbers.

Monument 3

The third monument is (.024 × W) - (.14 × D) minutes south and (.08 × X) - (.744 × C) minutes west of the second monument.  At the third monument, answer two final questions:

(Y) In what year was the subject of the memorial found?

(Z) What is the speed limit on the nearby road?

This will give you two last numbers, Y and Z.  Your partner in Utah will also be obtaining two last numbers, E and F.  Once again, you should share your numbers.

The Final

The cache container is hidden (.003 × Y) - (.21 × F) minutes south and (.369 × Z) - (.031 × E) minutes west of the third monument.

When you log your find, please tell us who your partner was.  Please contact us if you have any questions or need anything clarified.

Ahoy!
