Geocache Description:

The coords take you to an area in which you will want to explore. Depending on weather conditions, other areas along the roadcut may be more accessible than this location that I accessed when the ground was frozen.

The steep loess (pronounced "luss") hills were formed over a long period of time when winds picked up the small quartz crystals of pulverized rock that were created through glacial action. These events happened between 18,000 and 150,000 years ago.

At this roadcut along Highway 12 you will find 90 million year-old bedrock exposed near the entrance to Stone State Park. It is possible to find fossils in the rock layers here.

When wet, loess can be very slippery so please be careful and wear appropriate footwear.

Please send an email with the following tasks completed and reported:

1) What type of rock(s) do you discover here.

2) Locate a fossil in the strata and report the elevation at which you discovered it.
Also take a picture of yourself with the fossil and your GPS in the background and upload it with your log.

3) Describe the terrain that you are seeing in all directions around you.
