Motorway Mayhem caches are designed to provide fairly easy drive-by caches for travellers who are in need of a break.
This cache is located just off the roundabout of the southbound carriageway but is accessible from both the northbound and southbound sides of the motorway.
Please park in the Mascrat Manor car park and not on the private road. The landlord is happy for cachers to park up whilst caching so don't worry about the clamping signs.
You are looking for a 1 litre lock and lock container covered in camo tape with an official geocache sticker on top. THERE IS NO NEED TO CLIMB ANY FENCES TO ACCESS THIS CACHE. YOUNG CHILDREN SHOULD BE SUPERVISED DUE TO PROXIMITY OF THE CACHE TO THE SLIP ROAD.
The cache was inspired by a similar TB Hospital at junction 12 of the M6, now sadly archived. They had the idea of giving the poor old TB’s, which are racing up and down the country and indeed the world, some TLC so that’s what this cache now does. Included in this cache are resealable bags, labels that you can write on the TB’s mission if known, clear plastic wallets for Coins, spare chains for TB’s etc. There are also a few items of treasure for swaps.
All I ask is that you don’t leave the cache with no inhabitants, ideally only take as many TB’s or coins as you leave. I would also suggest taking the cache back to your car to sign the log book and carry out any necessary surgery as although it is in a quiet corner it’s a pretty busy spot and not everyone understands our loony hobby!
If you are wanting more than a quick cache and dash or are in need of shops, other caches etc then the following may be useful:
Food: If you take the A57 west into Warrington there is a sandwich shop and two small supermarkets (one of which is open 24 hours) within 5 minutes drive, all on the A57 itself, or visible from it. There are also two other pubs along this stretch of road.
Petrol: Again, following the A57 into Warrington there is a filling station within 5 minutes. Open 24 hours.
Other things: Heading in on the A57 west again, there is a post office, cash point and chemist within 5 minutes of the motorway junction. There are also two of those big national hotel chain type places on the other side of the roundabout.
If you fancy stretching your legs I can recommend a few nearby caches that are not too taxing but will let you get some fresh air and nice views over the River Mersey. Mersey Way: What Is It? is only a five minute walk away, or why not drive down to the bottom of Weir Lane and grab Mersey Way: The Starting Grid. You could even bag all six Mersey Way caches, it would make a nice walk and escape from the motorway – you’ll even get to walk under the Thelwall Viaduct!
