You are looking for a 400ml container. This is the fourth of the
Arran Clach of Cultures caches is hidden in the vicinity of
Clach a' Bhradain and near the A481 which encircles the Isle
of Arran. The pun is very much intended, a Clach is a rock
and each of these caches celebrates a cultural clash on Arran and a
rock associated with a different animal.
The Salmon Stone is not a mimeolith but one of a number of
tidal markers around the island, normally a large stone, on which
the the height of the tide could be assessed and hence whether a
particular inshore channel or bar was navigable. At Catacol the
villagers were by tradition cattle herders and had little intrest
in the sea untill their landlord evicted them from their
traditional homes and made them fishermen in the 1840s. Catacol was
the last bastion of Gaelic speaking on the island and at the end of
the 19th Century was still 90% Gaelic speaking. Local tradition has
it that when the salmon were running they would play around this
stone.
The cache is not hidden under Clach a' Bhradain , for then it
would only be available at low water spring tides. Instead it is
170m at 068° (magnetic) from the Salmon Stone.
