It's estimated that the Dire Wolf (Canis dirus) lived during the late Pleistocene era till its extinction about 10,000 years ago. Since they were widespread in North America, a few probably roamed these hills and valleys thousands of years ago.
When searching around, especially at twilight or during a storm, you might hear a howl – a darker and more foreboding sound than that of the resident coyotes or the raptors circling above. The sound could be from a Ghost of the Dire Wolf... or just the wind singing through the trees...
"In the timbers of Fennario
the wolves are running round
The winter was so hard and cold
froze ten feet neath the ground
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please don't murder me..."
– "Dire Wolf" words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia
