WOODSTOCK
Woodstock, named after the rock festival, first visited Snoopy in “Peanuts” in 1967, though creator Charles Schulz didn’t give him a name and establish him as a full-fledged character until 1972. Woodstock, the funny-looking little yellow bird, quickly became Snoopy the Beagle’s best friend. Woodstock often works as Snoopy’s secretary (most notably when the latter was appointed “Head Beagle”), caddies for him when he plays golf (usually with some difficulty), and plays football with him, usually attempting to catch the ball but, due to his size, is simply hit by it, getting embedded in the ground. Woodstock and his fellow yellow birds often join Snoopy for group activities, most frequently Beagle Scout expeditions with Snoopy as Scoutmaster. During the winter Woodstock relaxes by either skating or playing hockey on top of his frozen birdbath (he has his own Zamboni). Despite all his “athleticism”, he’s a very poor flyer, flittering around in erratic fashion, often upside down and frequently crashing into things, and prone to “beak-bleeds” if he goes over 10 feet in the air. Woodstock’s speech is rendered entirely in “chicken scratch” marks, and Snoopy is the only non-bird character who can understand him, usually translating for the benefit of the reader. Woodstock’s one goal throughout the comic/cartoon is to track down his mother so he can send her a Mother’s Day card.
