Jim Gary's Sculptures - The Playground Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ericles: I always said that if the dinosaurs vanished I would close down the cache. Well, they're gone and it looks like a new family has moved into JG's old place. They fixed it up really nicely but, to be honest, I preferred the old lawn ornaments. Hope everyone enjoyed the cache while it lasted!
If you didn't get a chance to see the sculptures while they were here, you can check out this video made by his neighbor and studio manager. I have at this time not been able to figure out where the artwork went but I'm working on it.

Geocache Description:

A small roadside cache featuring the largest lawn ornaments in New Jersey.

This cache is number three in the Jim Gary's Sculptures Series. These coordinates will bring you Jim Gary's former home. It is still decorated as he left it when he died in 2006. I wont ruin the surprise, but this is the mother-lode for admirers of his art. Jim Gary designed and created most of his art right out of this home. Around the holidays he decorated the works with lights and served cookies, milk & smiles with anyone who stopped by to chat. Despite serving in the US Navy, selling hundreds of sculptures, winning dozens of awards, being featured in scores of write-ups in newspapers, magazines & books and even having an exhibit of his art touring the world, Jim never lost his own small town attitude. You can call him Jim too. He would have preferred it that way.

As you check out the local inhabitants, remember that Jim created all of these by hand. He was self taught and scavenged most of the parts from local junk and scrap yards. Be sure to note the contrast between the bright signature colors and his subdued actual signature on a few of the pieces. This contrast is fitting. For him it was never about being recognized or famous. It was about creating art and making people smile.

You are hunting for a small Lock&Lock alongside the road away from the house. You can pull over and park right by GZ. Though nature has started to reclaim it, this was where folks used to park when visiting. This isn't meant to be a difficult find but please rehide the cache well - don't just create a large geopile - and be mindful of the neighbors. This is a quiet suburban neighborhood after all!
