Welcome to Cape May County Park North in Palermo, NJ. This cache
will fulfill the “Wintergreen” requirement for
the South
Jersey Checkpoint Challenge.
The cache is not at the posted
coordinates.
Update on hours!
Park is open from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The sign states that the
gates are locked promptly at 3:30 pm.
The Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary at Cape May County Park North is a
great spot for avid wildlife watchers and families.
The park was created as part of bequest from the Cameron family
that placed restrictions on the use of the property so that it will
long remain a park and refuge. It was left to Cape May County in
1988.
The park consists of about 25 fenced acres and encompasses a
variety of habitats including deciduous woodland, ponds and
wetlands, crossed by easy, dirt and paved walking trails.
White-tailed deer wander throughout the park. You can have close
encounters with a variety of wildlife. Egrets roost over the lakes,
herons fly by and warblers and kinglets enjoy the pine trees at the
water’s edge. This is a place for easy nature viewing while
hunting for this SJCC cache.
Park in the lot at the provided coordinates and follow your GPSr to
the posted coordinates. As you begin your trek, take time to greet
the Jersey Devil. He may make your journey easier.
Total round trip is about 1 mile. At the posted coordinates, you
will find a plaque with information about an Eagle Scout project
done by a Troop 55, Tuckahoe scout. Part of the wigoweb team was
the first Eagle Scout in Troop 55 a very long time ago. This area
was not a park at the time.
Locate the date on the plaque. A = the first digit of the day plus the
first digit of the year.
Next, look for an interpretative sign about the Green Winged Teal.
What does it say about the incubation period? Use the two-digit
number for the minimum incubation period. B = the first digit plus the second
digit. You are looking for a camoed lock 'n lock. We placed an
unactivated geocoin in the cache as FTF prize. Other goodies are in
the container, too.
Wintergreen is an aromatic,
evergreen plant with an underground or creeping stem producing
branches not more than 6 inches in height. The lower part of the
branch is smooth and the ends are crowded with leathery, dark green
leaves. During the summer the plant has small white flowers. The
flowers become berries, which ripen in autumn, and become bright
red, mealy, and spicy, and remain on the plant sometimes until
spring. All parts of the plant are aromatic. Wintergreen oil is
used as flavoring for candies, chewing gum and medicines.
Wintergreen is found throughout NJ.

Information
The South Jersey Geocachers (SJG) are sponsoring the South Jersey
Checkpoint Challenge series. This challenge is intended to take
geocachers on a tour of Southern New Jersey (loosely defined as
south of I-195) while finding caches placed by members of the SJG.
On the tour, we hope you will find South Jersey an interesting and
beautiful part of our great state.
Scattered around the area are 26 checkpoint caches and a final
challenge cache - South
Jersey Checkpoint Challenge (GC1NJDZ). The names of the
individual checkpoint caches are based on a phonetic alphabet using
plants to represent the diversity of ecosystems that you will
encounter on your tour of Southern New Jersey. You may even run
into the infamous Jersey Devil while you're there. The 26
checkpoints do not have to be completed in any particular order.
See the SJCheckpoint bookmark for the complete list of caches.
Hidden within the 26 checkpoint caches are numbers to be used in
determining the coordinates of the final South Jersey Checkpoint
Challenge cache – please be sure to note them while you are
there.
While there are no special logging requirements for the 26
checkpoint caches, there are special logging requirements for the
final challenge cache. Complete information can be found on the
South
Jersey Checkpoint Challenge (GC1NJDZ) cache page.
Happy caching and enjoy the South Jersey Checkpoint
Challenge!!!
