Both of our canine caching buddies, Krissie and Athena, have hidden
caches for others to find. Our littlest dog, Sammie, decided it was
time to have one of her own. It is located in the Summersville Lake
WMA, just south of Summersville, West Virginia.
From U.S. Route 19, turn onto Airport Road. If traveling north,
this is a left-hand turn; if coming south, turn right. To get to
the cache, you have to hike an old woods road/jeep trail. On some
maps and online mapping sources, this trail appears to be a paved
roadway that can be driven, but it is actually no more than a path
in some places and has been blocked or gated to vehicular traffic
for more than 45 years. There are a couple of places to access the
trail from Airport Road:
The first access point is at N38° 15.457, W080° 51.787.
There is a pull-off spot on the left side of the road beside an old
rusted gate with space for one or two vehicles. Park here. Across
the road you will see the Summersville WMA sign and an old,
grass-covered road with a blue gate that goes uphill. Follow this
old road and your GPSr to the cache.
The second access point is at N38° 15.256, W080° 52.122.
There, you will see a gravel pull-off on the left side of the road
with space for 2 or 3 vehicles. Park here. Go directly across the
road from where you parked, and you will see a well-worn path going
over a hump of earth. Beyond this, you will see the path split and
go two ways, downhill and to the left, and a steep uphill to the
right that parallels the road. The steep uphill path is the way you
want to go. Just follow your GPSr from there.
The cache is located on a high point in the WMA, so no matter which
access point you choose, the way in is mostly uphill. The path does
level out some as it follows the old jeep trail along the
ridgetops. When you get within 300 feet of the hiding place, the
coordinates will be pointing you to the top of a steep hill. If you
are in a hurry, you can bushwhack straight up from there; or if you
are patient and continue to follow the old road that goes up on the
left side of the hill, you will find a much easier way to the
cache. The round trip hiking distance from either access point to
the cache is about 1½ miles.
The cache is in a 2.1 liter Lock & Lock-type container. Initial
contents are: a lighted ghost pen, squeeze ball, toy car, steer
figurine, key chain, 2 fossils, first aid kit, calculator pen,
utility rope, watch, car bug alert, toy salamander, and a log book
with pen.
Please rehide the cache exactly as found so it will still be there
for the next person. This is a Wildlife Management Area, so take
care and consider wearing some blaze orange, especially if you are
searching during the prime hunting months of October, November and
December.
