Geocache Description:

A traditional cache on an undeveloped island, located 1.5 beach miles from the parking area.

This cache is located on Sears Island, in Searsport, and is part of a series of caches intended to show off this beautiful spot. The 900+ acre Island lies in Penobscot Bay, and is attached to the mainland by a man made causeway. The hike all the way around on the beach is about 5 miles (best done between high tides). A dirt road runs the 2 mile length of the island in a north-south direction (turn left halfway up the hill on the paved road). Motorized vehicles are not allowed except for utility workers. Park on the causeway, but don't block the gate. Wear blaze orange during hunting season in the fall. Terrain and conditions vary widely – plan carefully and use common sense.

Hiking here frequently, we tend to dash around the island instead of taking our time, hence the name of this cache. The play on words also refers to what we will say when you tell us about your adventures doing this and the other caches nearby! Brag it up all you want, including method and direction of travel, obstacles and solutions, and of course, the time you took! D&P's average time to hike all the way around the island on the beach is 2 hours, and often includes a quick lunch. Our family's fastest record of 1 hour, 28 minutes was made by P on a crisp, dry, fall day. It's only 5 miles, afterall! On the other hand, our very first hike around took us 3 or 4 long exhausting hours, but launched our hiking obsession. We never considered the tides that day, so we were lucky not to have to climb any cliffs. Now that we're in better shape, we occasionally plan to do the beach at high tide for the added adventure, though not during the highest tides at full or new moons!

You can search for this cache from the beach, the roads, a bushwhack, or the water; it's about 1.5 miles from the causeway along the beach on the east side of the island. Look for a green cammo taped peanut butter jar, containing log book and pencils. Starting out with a TB, and a variety of the usual swag. Please keep trade items small as the cache is not very big. Congratulations to tandemstoker for being First To Find!! Wow, two in a row!

We hope you enjoy Sears Island as much as we do, and please tell us about your adventure in your log. D&P, 4ccnhikers
