Statarlängorna, the cotter houses is one of the information
points on the approximately 5km long "culture in the nature"-trail,
which is laid out in Rydebäck.
The houses located on either side of the road in the vicinity of
the cache are Scoutstugan (the scout cabin) and Sjöstugan (the
sea cabin). The cotter houses were built during the time Carl
Holtfreter owned the Rydebäck mansion (1845-1880). During his
era, the farming area of the farm was expanded, which required more
labor. The cotter system had become a popular way in the south of
Sweden to get cheap labor. Carl introduced the cotter system on the
farm and it was not abolished until in 1945.
The cotters were contract employees and lived on the estates in
special accomodations for cotters, known as "statarlängorna"
(cotter houses). The cotters were married and were contracted as a
family, that meant that the wife was expected to work too. The
salary was paid mostly in kind and they had the right to plant a
barrel of potatoes (100 kg) per year on the farm's land. Included
in the salary was also firewood, cereal, milk and accomodation. The
contracts stretched from the last week in October and one year
forward. It was during this week, the "hungry week" that the
cotters could change their workplace.

Husen som ligger på ömse sidor av vägen i
närheten av cachen är Scoutstugan och Sjöstugan. De
uppfördes som statarlängor under den tid då
Brukspatron Carl Holtfreter ägde Rydebäcks gård
(1845-1880). Under hans ägo utökades gårdens
jordbruksareal, vilket krävde arbetskraft. Statarsystemet hade under denna tid blivit ett
populärt sätt att få billig arbetskraft i
sydsverige. Carl införde statarsystemet på gården

Statarna var kontraktsanställda på i regel ett
år i taget och bodde på godsen i speciella
statarbostäder, de s k statarlängorna. Statarna var gifta
och anställdes familjevis, dvs hustrun förväntades
också att arbeta. Lönen betalades till största
delen i natura, dvs i en överenskommen stat. Att vara statare
innebar kort sagt att ha tagit "stat", därav ordet statare. De
hade rätt att sätta en tunna potatis (100 Kg) per
år på godsets jord. I övrigt ingick i lönen
ved, spannmål och mjölk samt bostad. Årskontraktet
sträckte sig från sista veckan i oktober och ett
år framåt i tiden. Det var under denna vecka,
