Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the visitor parking area of the N.Y. State Fish Hatchery, also known as the Catskill Fish Hatchery.

The Catskill Fish Hatchery has brown trout ranging from the egg stage up to 3 yrs. old. Tours are provided for groups, or you can just go look at the astonishing amount of fish! Spawning season ranges from late August to early September, and according to Manager Scott Covert, an occasional eagle can be spotted sitting in the tree tops surrounding the hatchery. (Protective netting and good building design prevents free meals!)

One of the best things about this place is their participation in Trout in the Classroom, which is a conservation-oriented environmental educational program for students. The students raise trout from egg stage to fry (fry? yes, fry...) then release them into approved coldwater streams and lakes. This act of raising, monitoring and caring for young trout fosters a conservation ethic within participating students and promotes an understanding of their shared water resources. This program started with 4 schools, between here upstate and downstate in Brooklyn, and is currently in approximately 200.

The educational value of this place is priceless, and remember folks; this place is NYS tax payer funded, so take advantage of what we have provided! Hours are M-F 8:30-4 and S-S 8:30-noon. Hatchery does not have to be open to locate cache.
