Geocache Description:

One of a series of 6 caches placed along a public footpath which runs for about 1.5 miles along the old Hatherton Canal from Oak Lane, Calf Heath to The Roman Way Hotel, Longford A5.

The Hatherton Canal was originally 4 miles long with 21 locks. It was first opened in 1841 as a branch of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal from Calf Heath to Churchbridge. The Churchbridge Locks were opened in 1860 to link with the Cannock Extension Canal. It was a very busy canal for 100 years carrying coal and other goods, but in 1955 it was abandoned and is now a derelict waterway.

All caches are easily found from within a few feet of the tow-path.

The recommended start to the walk is from Oak Lane N 52° 40.722 W 002° 05.060 where there is parking space in the lane near the canal bridge. If you start the walk from the Roman Way Hotel, do not park here they allow pedestrian access through their car park to the canal only. Please park on the retail park N 52° 40.720 W 002° 02.880 and walk the short distance along the A5 back to the Hotel. Enter the public footpath from Bridge 8 which is to the rear of the Roman Way Hotel.

This cache is a small clip box in camo bag close to Cats Bridge 6. There's a badge for FTF

Cats Bridge 6 was demolished after it suffered badly from coal mining subsidence, the canal is now culverted
