Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches with a mythology theme, all created by students at The Riverside School in Lyndonville. We hope that you enjoy learning something about our favorite myths!

MEDUSA:
Medusa was an ancient Greek monster. Born beautiful, her hair was turned into snakes by the angry Athena. Medusa was so ugly that if one looked at her they were turned to stone. She and her sisters, the Gorgons, lived in a cave.
The most famous myth about Medusa is Perseus's slaying of her. Perseus was attending a wedding but didn’t have a gift, so the nasty groom demanded that Perseus bring back the head of Medusa. As Perseus set out, he met Athena and Hermes. They gave him gifts to help him with the deadly task. Athena gave him a shield so shiny that he could see Medusa's reflection to know where she was without turning into stone. Hermes gave him winged shoes so once he killed Medusa he could fly away from the other Gorgons safely. At the cave, Perseus snuck up on the sleeping Gorgons, and using the shield, located Medusa and cut off her head. Flying away from her sisters with the shoes, he went back to the wedding. Once he got there, he turned the man who sent him on the quest to stone using Medusa's hideous head.

About our school:
The Riverside School is a premier day school for grades 2-8, comfortably situated in a historical landmark in the village of Lyndonville. The mission of The Riverside School is to develop active learners, patient leaders, and engaged citizens in a supportive community. We were founded in 1981 and have a proud tradition of enthusiastic students, dedicated faculty, and involved parents. Our mascot is the Heron because we believe the animal that students observed on the property of the school during its founding years demonstrates the values of our community.

Additional Notes:
The cache is winter friendly, but bring snow boots because the terrain is relatively slippery. There is a nearby pavilion where you can park a car in the summer. There is a small grill, so make it a family outing and have dinner . Beware of muggles who might be walking their dogs or going for a hike.
