Texas Acres/Oklahoma City depression-era camps/Alunite Mine @RR pass

Railroad Pass got its name from a proposed 1890s rail line to Searchlight which was never built. In the early Twentieth Century, the discovery of Alunite by Professor Hill led to the creation of a mining district, as alunite is a mineral often found with gold. Unfortunately gold was never found in sufficient amounts to be profitable.

During the 1930s, a casino, bars, and other sources of pleasure were developed near the current site of the Railroad Pass Casino. In addition, two shantytowns or Hoovervilles, known as Oklahoma City and Texas Acres grew up on the Vegas valley side of the pass, for people who came for the work available on the Hoover Dam project. Noted for their lawlessness, they were later disbanded by local authorities after the end of construction on the dam.
