Voted Cache of The Year 2009
We chose this location due to some interesting history. In the late
60's this site was the location of an intense search for a man who
held up several businesses along the North shores of Lake Superior.
It all started in the town of Marathon and as this criminal got
closer to Thunder Bay (then the twin cities of Port Arthur and Fort
William) his crimes became more and more brutal. Finally a convoy
of O.P.P tactical units surrounded the man at this very location.
He fled into the bush, it was late in the evening, a heavy fog
blanketing the area and a light drizzle that would not stop made it
a bone chilling spring evening. The officers slowly made their way
into the wet bush, flashlights in one hand service revolvers in the
other. They could feel their hearts pounding in their chests. Shots
rang out!!! Screams and shouting ensued echoing over the ridge, it
was chaos! more shots. Then moaning was heard, a gurgling sound
that only meant one thing. They new he was hit, yet even though
there were traces of blood they never located the man. The search
continued in the area for weeks yet no sign of this criminal was
ever found. Pretty cool story eh? Actually I just made that up. We
found it on Google earth while looking for spots to hide a cache
last summer, and it seemed kind of a neat spot for a hide.
Located along highway 11/17 with a pull over on either side of the
highway across from the cache. It will require a 240 meter hike
through some opened bush, with some light bushwacking nothing too
bad.(At least for Killer and I. Others may not agree with our
version of a light bushwack) The terrain will be rocky in areas and
may be wet in some spots at certain times of the year, but for the
most part it is usually good.
We put flagging tape along the way even though it really is not
necessary. The sound of highway traffic will always be heard to
guide you back for those that are not confidant about a little
jaunt in the bush in their search for "The Marathon Man".
Any resemblance to a certain individual is merely coicidental
In the winter Aagimug (snowshoes) are recomended
We have been there a few times since, the last time was on April 27
only one small water puddle to walk around, follow the flagging
tape to the left of the water puddle for now. You will be high and
dry.
