Welcome to the newest section of the Westmoreland Heritage Trail. This part of the rail-trail opened in 2008, extending the WHT another few miles from its starting point in Saltsburg. Future plans are for the trail to continue on through Delmont and then end in Trafford. Visit this website for more information.
Although a pleasant scenic walk or bike ride any time of year, I think this trail really shines during the spring wildflower season (specifically late April and early May). When I explored the area last spring, I was amazed by the large colonies of red trilliums I found here. They carpet the hillsides along the trail – truly a beautiful sight! I even found the uncommon yellow-flowered form of red trillium. Some of the other flowers I noted were white large-flowered trillium, dutchman’s breeches, creeping phlox, and greek valerian. Take your time, slow down, and enjoy this annual spectacle. There are also several other caches along this trail.
Oh, yeah, the cache – can’t forget that now can we? It's an ammo can and shouldn’t be too difficult to find. Use appropriate caution if muggles are in view and please rehide well. You should wear orange during hunting seasons. Round trip for this hunt is a little over 2 miles; it’s an easy walk or ride, though there is an uphill grade. Recommended parking for the cache is at the Sara Steele parking area - N 40° 27.755 W 079° 28.932. The other designated trail parking area is at the Slickville VFD at N 40° 27.630 W 079° 31.224, but you'll miss most of the best scenery if you start from that end. Any other parking areas are on private property. This is my first cache placement – finally – hope you enjoy it!
