Geocache Description:

The geocache is placed near Sliding Rock, one of the best swimming holes in the Cranberry Lake Region. Cache is small, but has plenty of room for trade items. Cachers will find swag relating to hiking, camping, and fishing in the Adirondacks.

Where is the Cache?

Sliding Rock, one of the most popular and hidden swimming holes in the Cranberry Lake Region. Instead of cliff jumping or just plain swimming, Sliding Rock involves a long expanse of sloped rock with a constant supply of water. Using a cushion (Very Important), you can slide from the top into a pool of water at the bottom.

Sliding Rock is located directly on the Six Mile Creek Trail in the Five Ponds Wilderness Area. The trail has a trailhead on Cranberry Lake located on West Flow as well as being part of the trail network in the wilderness area.

How to get to the Cache?

1) Water. West Flow is accessible to both motorized and non-motorized water craft. The public can put in motorboats in Cranberry Lake at the Public Boat Launch or in nearby Wanakena. People with canoes/kayaks can use Wanakena, the public boat launch in Cranberry Lake, the Cranberry Lake Campground, or other locations.

2) Foot. The trail network with which Six Mile Creek is a part of is accessible from trailheads in Cranberry Lake, Wanakena, and even Horseshoe Lake. Many trail guides and websites (ex. cranberrylake50.org) discuss these trailheads and hikes in detail. Hiking will require a hike of a little over 10 miles one way. Many campsites and lean-tos are available along the trail.

What does the cache look like?

The cache is a stainless steel canister with a tight fit. It is accessible during winter in all but the deepest snows. The challenge in this cache will be getting there, not the search. A spoiler photo is included for those who want to be sure they will find it.

A note on difficulty

For cachers approaching by motorized boat, this cache should prove pretty simple to access. For those hiking or paddling, 4.5 is a much more reasonable terrain rating.
