A fairly remote cache at the edge of the Pentland Hills park
Cache placed for several reasons:
- fill a gap in the cache-map at the west end of the Pentlands
- this cache can be used to extend a walk from Carlops via Chizu's Border Boulder cache
- the actual spot itself is an interesting location, with views down to the Forth and beyond
- get the timing/light right and the stand of trees at the cache location offers some wonderful photographic opportunities
The Borestane is a small rocky outcrop in the moor, and can make a good spot for a break while walking the moor. Origins of the name "Borestane" are subject to speculation, but one of the Pentlands walking guides asserts that this relates to a past history of hunting wild boar near here: the Boar Stane. Feel free to add your own interpretation when logging the cache.
Access note: not marked on any map, but there is a large track that crosses the moor from Wester Bavelaw Farm to just north of King's Hill at N55 50.149 W003 22.498. This would be easy cycling - unlike the path made of logs that climbs up to Borestane from there!
