St Michael,
Latchingdon
photo c.1900, courtesy of www.essexchurches.com
The former St Michael's church has definitely been standing
since 1618 as dated on the north wall, however there hints of
possible Norman foundations. St Michael's used to serve as the
parish church of Latchingdon and Snoreham but with the development
towards Latchingdon village to the north, the church became
increasingly isolated resulting in the building of the new
ChristChurch.
Curiously despite the old church being made redundant, the
churchyard is still in use and maintained and from it's elevated
position on the ridge over the village there are some beautiful
views. The church still stands having been converted into a private
house in 1970 and it can still be viewed either from the road or
from the footpath to the north of the churchyard. Please respect
the owners privacy by not trespassing past the fence line.
