Geocache Description:

Welcome to Schlater, MS. This is a town full of big tales.

This modest agricultural community is home to both buried treasure and a headless horseman. The tale of the buried treasure dates back to the Civil War. When the county treasurer was warned of approaching Union Soldiers, he gathered up all the county's gold, silver and currency and buried it. He died before he could retrieve it, taking the secret location to the grave. Despite the best effort of treasure hunters, the treasure has never been found. The headless horseman is the ghost of Red Elm, an Indian brave who fell in love with a married woman named Mrs. James. Her husband decaptitated Red Elm and shortly after Mrs. James herself died. She is buried under two red elm trees that have grown together as one.
