The Demise of the Taylor Brothers

Baldknobbers Baldknobber

In the 1880s the vigilante group known as the Bald Knobbers roamed this land, taking the law into their own hands. One of their first "examples" were the Taylor brothers. Frank and Tubal Taylor lived with their mother and siblings near Taneyville, Missouri. The Taylor Brothers were the up-to-no-good outlaw type. One day in 1885, the Taylor brothers went to the general store of Mr. J.T. Dickenson, in Dickens, Missouri. They wanted to buy a pair of boots on credit. Mr. Dickenson, well aware of their antics, and having dealt with them in the past, refused. The Taylor brothers then shot Dickenson. When the wife of Mr. Dicksonson heard the commotion, she came up to the front of the store to see what was going on. Unfortunately they shot her as well. Both survived. In the days after the shootings, the Taylor brothers hid out in the woods. Once they got word that the sheriff of Taney County posted a reward for them, they came up with a plan. They decided that the members of their gang would turn the brothers in. Then they would collect the reward money and split it between themselves. The Taylors had a feeling that they would get off easy since they were locals and Dickensons were newcomers to the area. They were wrong. As it turned out, J.T. Dickenson was a Bald Knobber. That night, an angry mob of over 100 Bald Knobbers rode horses to the jail in Forsyth. They broke the Taylor brothers out of jail, took them north, and hung them. They wanted to make an example out of the Taylor Brothers for all the other outlaws. NOTE: The cache is as close as I could get to where the actual hanging took place.

I found a short video online that dramatizes the hanging. It is not entirely accurate, but it's pretty close. Click here to watch!
