Geocache Description:

Sited close to the Slea River Navigation walk starting in Carre Street Sleaford and in open ground. Muggles and Doggles abound here!

This is the 4th cache in the ongoing ‘Sidelined’ series, with this one subtitled ‘Off The Rails’.

It is 1937 and the railway system around Sleaford is far busier than it is nowadays. The Sleaford Avoiding line (these days reduced to a single operational line southbound only) is busy with steam hauled Passenger and Goods trains heading towards Spalding, Peterborough and destinations in Norfolk & Suffolk. Likewise similar traffic is heading Northbound to Lincoln, Doncaster & the North.

At around Midday on Monday February 15th in the year of 1937, a disaster occurred on this stretch of line in which 4 people lost their lives with 1 other person injured. The York to Harwich boat train is steaming South and heading for Spalding and its eventual destination, at which it never arrived, careering into the bend off the main line resulting in the locomotive being derailed and the front 4 coaches being wrecked on top of a lineside hut in which the unfortunates were having their lunch.

A local car driver, driving from Ruskington towards Sleaford, witnessed the crash and stated that he thought the train was traveling unusually fast. This car driver rushed to Sleaford Railway station and reported the accident to the StationMaster from where rescue operations were put into place.

The cache, formed of a plastic rectangular container fitted with a press on lid and containing a log, pencil, TB and a couple of trinkets.

Happy Hunting!
