Geocache Description:

This is a three-part puzzle cache through Manhattan.

To accompany the story we wrote on Geocaching (www.nyc24.org) we thought it only appropriate that we post a journalism-related cache.

So follow our clues that lead past some of the most important journalistic icons in New York City – from City University of New York (CUNY) and the Village Voice building, to New York University (NYU) and the New York Times building, and finally to our fine institution, the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.

Because this cache is hidden in New York, it’s safest to cache during the day.

Location 1: The lede

This first cache (N40 43 714, W73 59 435) will take you close to New York University’s Graduate School of Journalism and the Village Voice building – a pillar of NYC journalism in addition to being one of the first publications to write about geocaching. Village Voice is also the only publication known to have a picture of cache_ninja – the father of Manhattan geocaching.

Look for a statue. On the back of the statue is an inscription. Count the number of wreaths to get B. Take note of the first Roman numeral on the inscription.

Now, look for the Village Voice building. Chiseled into the front of the building are two words. Count the number of letters in the second word, and subtract it from the Roman numeral to get E.

Location 2: Looking for sources

Next go to the New York Times building. The Times recently caught on to geocaching, publishing an article about the sport in its magazine only last week.

Walk around the building (N40 45 21.9, W73 59 27.0). Look for a funky clock on one of the adjacent buildings. Above the clock is a sign with blue letters: Count the number of letters on the sign. Keep note of this number, you’ll need it later.

Go next to CUNY’s Graduate School of Journalism (N40 45 184, W73 59 186). If you look though the glass window, you will see a black marble plaque. Read the plaque to learn a little about the history of journalism in New York City. The number before the word “Pulitzer” is A.

To get F, count the number of lines in the third paragraph and subtract it from the clock clue.

Location 3: On background

On the steps of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism (N40 45 45.1, W73 55 35.7) is a statue. On the back of the statue is an inscription. Count the number of Ts to get C. On the building behind the statue is a number. Subtract the first digit from the third digit to get D.

Final cache: Deadline
N40 48 ABC, W73 58 DEF

First to Find (FTF) will be rewarded with some nifty Columbia charms.
