Geocache Description:

The history of the Eastleigh Works

There has been a scattering of farms and small holdings in the area that we now call Eastleigh as far back as the year 932.Eastleigh has undergone many spelling variations of its name with Eastlee,East Leah and Eastley all having been recorded through time.but it wasnt really until 1838 that Eastleigh became of any importance. In that year the London& South West Railway company built a railway from Southampton to Winchester. It passed through the small villiage of Barton. A station was built there, but named Bishopstoke Junction as at this time it was the nearest place of any importance, in fact it was Bishopstoke that initially benefitted from the introduction of the Market, However it was not the Station that lead to Eastleighs quick development from a small hamlet to a thriving railway town, but the introduction of the carriage and wagon works which begun construction in 1899.It was the London & South western railway company who needed more works capacity as their current Nine Elms works was not large enough so it was relocated to a larger site at Eastleigh. This new industry boomed, causing a rapid population growth and quick expansion of the town and introduction of proper sewerage, street lighting and further urbanisation. In 1909 a locomotive works was built in Eastleigh. The locomotive works reached a total of 314 new locomotives by 1950 and 115 significant rebuilds by 1961. The works had employed as many as 2500 people in its hey day. Although the very reason for Eastlieghs growth, as time went on the railway industry declined. The carriage works closed in 1967 but in the same year a new 22 stage progressive carriage overhaul layout was built in the main block of the workshop. this replaced the old 44 stage layout in the former carriage works but achived the same output.Eastleigh later boasted the most cost-effective carriage layout in the country. But by 1973 the works workload was sharply declining as modern train units came on the scene. Closure of the works was on may 31st 2006 with assets having been auctioned off, only the big overhead cranes remained on site, being too heavy to economicially dismantle.By the summer of that year, the works looked very empty. But later that same year,South west trains need more train storage space. Knights Rail Services took out a lease on some of the tracks in the works in order to accomadate this. But soon not only storage was required but also the short term rental of facilties for all rail vechicle overhauls. The extension of the lease by Knights Rail Services other compainies such as wabtec, network rail, doing some of the work the site was designed for..
