Geocache Description:

This is a route I run with my dog Thornton, who is a chocolate lab. Hope you get the significance of the name! The route gives me a chance to run (er walk) hills and him to get off the lead for a romp. To get to the cache you can park at the following co ords N54 36.087 W005 41.367 North Road, walk through the gap in the hedge between some un occupied town houses and a boarded up house. This path takes you round the top of a quarry (not active and fenced) and on to the path to the Lead Mines. Or N54 36.844 W005 40.927 The Somme Heritage Centre and walk up the path to the Lead Mines. Both are about equidistant to the cache, 20/30 mins depending on how long your legs are! If it has been raining take boots and if you hands are delicate, gloves! From the top of the rock you can see Scrabo Tower with the Mournes rising behind and in the opposite direction, Helen's Tower poking up through the trees. It is beautiful up here espically at dawn or dusk and also if there is mist over the low ground. Watch out for the muggles on scramblers! More so at the weekend. They are harmless really but can appear out of the most surprising places! You usually hear them anyway. Not suitable for wheel chairs I`m afraid and buggies would find it a challenge, depending on how adventurous the driver is! The cache is a small one with the usual log book and bits and pieces, and of course a pooh bag (unused!). It`s Thornton's cache and he may get caught short but if your dog needs it please take it! Gorse may come and go around the site, so don't give up looking. I have replaced the cache but original one was still there. Enjoy the cache!
