The Research Camp of the world-famous Amboseli Elephant Research Project is tucked away in a date palm woodland in the heart of Amboseli National Park, the jewel in the crown of Kenya’s amazing array of national parks and reserves.
Amboseli is the centre of an 8,000km2 ecosystem, the life-blood of which is the water flowing from springs originating in the watershed of Kilimanjaro, just across the Tanzania border to the south. The mountain towers over a mosaic of bushlands, woodlands, plains, and wetlands, providing a stunning backdrop to the diverse communities of wildlife and pastoralist livestock supported by its waters. The Amboseli Elephant Research Project was started in 1972 and is the longest-running study of elephants in the world, documenting the lives of some 1,500 elephants, and working hard to conserve them, their habitat and the wildlife species that share it. Amboseli can be reached by road (a 4x4 is best) via Namanga or Emali-Mbirikani, or by air with daily flights by Air Kenya and SafariLink. The Research Camp is halfway between Ol Tukai and Serena Lodges, and the staff working in the camp know all about the cache. Entry to the Camp is along the narrow track through the palms where you may see a No Entry sign -- geocaching visitors are welcome, so you do not need special persmission from park authorities to pass this sign, but you are asked to show respect for the privacy of the people living and working there.
