Geocache Description:

DAYLIGHT HOURS ONLY PLEASE!

If you are there close to sunset please don't try and find these. These grounds are private and the sisters are sharing them with the caching community. Thanks!!

Cache placed with permission of the Sisters of the Holy Family.

As San Francisco was reeling from the incredible infusion of people seeking their fortunes in the Gold Rush, another ship tied up at her dock, bringing more people with dreams of making their fortunes. Among them, responding to a different call, was a newly ordained Irish priest, Father John Joseph Prendergast. The year was 1859. Although he had heard that priests were desperately needed in this new frontier, he was not prepared for the amount of poverty and neglect he saw all around him.

Father Prendergast threw himself into his work. His only frustration was how few he could care for among the vast numbers in the city that needed help, and he recognized a need for organized social relief work. He began to envision a congregation of religious women who would move throughout the city, not attached to any school or hospital, whose work would be to search out the poor and neglected, and provide for them whatever they needed. The birth of the Sisters of the Holy Family had begun. (excerpt from A Legacy of Caring)

Please be respectful of the grounds and only visit during the daylight hours since this is the home for active and retired sisters. In addition, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are busy times during which many weddings are held. Please be mindful of this.
