The benchmark coordinates are given above. The cache is in an easy hide 20 feet away on a compass bearing of 60° (roughly northeast). This location is at the highest point on the Gatesburg Ridge in PA State Game Lands No.176 and affords lovely views when the leaves are down.
The benchmark is named for Colonel Theodore Davis Boal of the Boalsburg family who once owned the property. Col. Boal received the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism during World War I.
The cache can be reached from Scotia Range Road via several alternative routes with a round trip distance of 2 to 2 1/2 miles and a vertical elevation gain of about 250 feet. Some routes may be easier than others, but all will require some bushwhacking near the cache. The parking coordinates given below are for the trailhead we used when we placed the cache, however there are other trailheads along Scotia Range Road which may serve just as well.
Because this cache is in a PA State Game Lands, be sure to wear blaze orange during all hunting seasons. As other geocachers have noted, ticks are prolific in this area. We would advise vigilance for everyone, especially for children.
