Geocache Description:

This is part of a series of caches in the Poole/Broadstone area based upon areas with lakes, ponds and puddles! Some are places that most people will be aware of and then there will be those that even we, before Google Earthing, were completely oblivious of!

Due to the nature of the location of these caches, we do stress to keep a good eye on your children whilst they are near the water's edge. Saying this, a lot of these ponds give you the opportunity to feed the ducks and swans, so plenty of fun to be had – but be safe!

Delph Wood is a woodland of 24 acres acquired by Poole Corporation in 1940. The wood originally extended to more than 100 acres, but in 1847 the Southampton to Dorchester railway cut the wood in two parts and in 1898 the northern part became the Broadstone Golf Course.

The word 'Delph' is derived from an Old English word for mining and quarrying and it was probably one of the places from which local people extracted gravel for building purposes.

The pond, now a drinking place for woodland animals including foxes and Roe deer, is probably a remnant of a gravel pit.

There is a 1½ mile woodland trail through the wood, which is marked by yellow topped posts leading from the car park. Look out for the highly coloured and very noisy Nuthatches and Great Spotted Woodpeckers - and you can't miss the magnificent 200 year old common Oak standing 80 feet high with a circumference of just over 13 feet, the foliage in the summer is so dense that nothing grows under it.

This cache is based at one of the ponds in Delph Woods.

Parking by the cricket ground or lower car park is recommended however you may be lucky to find a much quicker parking area for one or two cars on the main Gravel Hill ( although this takes the fun out of the walk and you may miss the other caches in this woods if you choose this option).

This is unfortunately not a wheelchair/buggy friendly cache as it has narrow undulating , and sometimes, muddy paths.

We hope you enjoy the Delph Wood Woodland Trail - please tell us if you spot anything interesting! Remember to take your camera to document your visit and the area (but not the actual cache!) and add it to our page.
