It served the Company with distinction, logging a total of 2,002 hours during 1,425 test flights.

Both the Learjet 35 and the Learjet 36 were derivatives of the Learjet 25. Changes included an increase of the wingspan by four feet, a fuselage stretch of 13 inches for increased passenger comfort, and new-generation Garrett TFE 731-2 turbofan engines, noticeably more fuel efficient and quieter than earlier generation business jets. The Model 36 is identical to the Model 35 except it has Additional range capability.

In 1987, Learjet 35-001 became the prototype for the Model 31 when delta fins were added and the wing was replaced with the pioneering Longhorn wing which sported the graceful winglets.

Learjet 35-001 continued to play an important supporting role in new aircraft development in the 1990s, serving as the engine test bed for the all-new Learjet 45 super light jet powered by Honeywell TFE 731-20 engines.

The final flight of Learjet 35-001 occurred June 6, 2001, at Mid-Continent Airport, in Wichita, Kansas.
