Geocache Description:

I have June 13th 2008 on the calendar for the 7th Annual Geo-Star Party here at Pine Mountain Observatory. Wow, the 7th year for the event! The moon will be third quarter waning this year. This means that we will have no moon until around midnight when the moon will rise and provide good light to do some night caching! If you can come on Thursday or Friday and make a long weekend of it. Email me if you are coming early, we need to put rigs and tents in the campground to secure it for folks showing up later. There are many interesting caches to do in a 20-mile radius of PMO. There are also some new caches to find in the area and more planned by the time the event takes place! Other activities besides stargazing and geocaching are bird watching, mt.bike riding, caving, rock-hounding, and hiking. I have lived in the Central Oregon area for over 37 years so just ask and I can give you information about things to do and places to go in the area so feel free to email me with questions. Travel to many of the interesting areas around here are on back roads so bring spare tires, extra food, water and charged cell phones…be prepared!
Camping will be available at the Pine Mountain Campground. Camping is free and I will provide trash hauling and drinking water. The observatory tour program does ask for 5 dollars per person for the evening stargazing show. The campground has 4 drive in RV sites (these sites are large and could be shared with 2 smaller RV’s) and a large group area with plenty of walk in tent camping areas. I also have some room for tent campers and RV’s around my place if we need an over flow area. I will have a wheelbarrow available to get tent camping supplies in to the walk in areas. The drive in sites can accommodate campers or motor homes up to 30 feet in length. If you are bringing a RV please let me know so I have an idea how much room to hold open. There are no power, water or sewer hookups and generator use is discouraged! Non street legal OHV’s are prohibited on the main road 2017. No motorized vehicles in the campground and observatory areas. Because people stay up stargazing into the wee hours of the morning the area around the campground and observatory is a designated quiet area.
Wireless Internet access is available in the observatory parking lot and on the benches in front of the 24” scope.
The Potluck-BBQ-Bonfire will be the main group campfire pit area starting around 6pm Saturday the 13th. This year I will be renting one of those big tow behind a vehicle BBQ’s so there will be plenty of room to cook your goodies. Viewing through the telescopes will begin when it gets dark. You can arrive anytime to set up camp and go caching!
Food details: Bring something to BBQ and drink. Use your Geocaching name: A-H- Bring Bread or Salad Item, and I-P a Vegetable Dish, R-Z bring a Desert.
Bring something for the raffle and let’s do another drawing of geocache related things. I promise to have the horseshoe pit set up. Logscaler brought up a BIG fire ring last fall and will be placing it in the group area as soon as the snow melts. Big Eddy will probably be setting up some sort of cool games.
If you have other questions or other event ideas send them to me at markpmo@uoregon.edu or post them at www.oregongeocaching.org under events, 7th Annual Pine Mountain Geo-Star Party Campout and we can discuss them. See you in June! Cache On!
