Geocache Description:

This cache is very near the town of East Brady, Pa and will serve to demonstrate the power of erosion.

This site, situated on the the Allegheny Plateau, overlooks the Allegheny River, as it passes through the town of East Brady, Pa. This particular section of the Allegheny Plateau is known as the Pittsburgh Low Plateau section. The Pittsburgh Low Plateau Section consists of a smooth undulating upland surface cut by numerous, narrow, relatively shallow valleys, one of which you will be measuring..
Local relief is a unit of measurement or comparison in elevation changes. The local relief on the uplands is generally less than 200 feet. Local relief between valley bottoms and upland surfaces may be as much as 600 feet. Valley sides are usually moderately steep except in the upper reaches of streams where the side slopes are fairly gentle. Elevations range from 660 to 1,700 feet. Some of the land surface in the southwestern part of the Section is very susceptible to landslides.

The Section covers much of western and southwestern Pennsylvania. It includes all of Greene, Washington, and Armstrong Counties, most of Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Jefferson, Clearfield, Westmoreland, and Indiana Counties, and parts of Lawrence, Venango, Elk, Cambria, and Fayette Counties.

If you look around you, while at this site, you'll notice that the surrounding hilltops are all more or less the same elevation. The hills are not hills at all, but the remnanats of the plateau. The valley that you are now looking over was formed by the river as it worked its way south to the Ohio valley, near present day Pittsburgh, Pa. The purpose of the cache is to show how much land has been carried away by the river. Note your elevation from your present point. Now go south on rt 68 to the town of East Brady, to a point near the river. Any place is fine. Now, note the measurement of elevation here. The difference in feet is the depth of the cut the Allegheny river has made through the bedrock in this valley. To log this find, send me the difference in elevation, and post a picture of yourself at the overlook with your log. Also while at the site, dont forget to find the nearby geocache, benchmark, and historical marker. Have fun!
