Geocache Description:

Dr. Anson West’s grave in Oak Hill Cemetery, Talladega, Alabama

Rev Anson West, D.D. (1832-1906) was a former pastor of the Talladega Methodist Episcopal Church, South (now the First United Methodist Church of Talladega) in 1870. He also served as Presiding Elder (now “District Superintendent” of the Talladega District on two occasions (1878-81 and 1886-89). His lasting contribution is his authoritative book “A History of Methodism in Alabama”, of which there is no equal. The book is valued because it is the only available history of the Methodist Church from the first preacher in the “Tombeckbe” area in 1803 to the end of the Civil War. It is not just the only available history; it is very tightly researched and authoritative. As such it is also as a very valuable history of the state of Alabama itself in its early years. First Stage: the coordinates will take you to Dr. West's grave. Notice the brass marker that is part of the toombstone. The man on horseback is a symbol of Methodist preachers, harking back to Circuit Rider days when Methodist preachers rode a circuit through the frontier, with preaching points all along it. Many times it would take a month to ride the full circuit and get back to the starting point. Second stage: Go south 140 feet. This is where the cache is hidden. Find it and sign the log. Congratulations to RCCamp on being FTF -- his first ever!
