Geocache Description:

A nanno way out here in the middle of nowhere. Should be quick and easy. Nice place to go for a bike ride.

Wild Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) For those of you that have been out and about on cache hikes or just driving around in some of the rural areas of this part of California, here are some facts about the wild turkeys you probably are seeing more and more of. HISTORY Some say Christopher Columbus named turkeys "tuka," the Tamil word for peacock. Considering Columbus thought he was in India at the time of the alleged naming, not in the New World where he actually was, this definition seems fairly plausible. Another suggestion is that Luis de Torres, a physician who served under Columbus, named the bird "tukki," which translates to "big bird" in Hebrew. Some say the North American Indians called the bird "firkee." If so, it's a word everyone else has mispronounced the past 508 years. One way or another we ended up with Turkey. On July 4 1776, the First Continental Congress selected a committee to design the Great Seal of the United States of America. It was the task of three founding fathers: Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson to select a political icon that best reflected the new country. While John Adams nominated the Bald Eagle, Benjamin Franklin nominated the turkey, not the eagle, as a fitting emblem for the Great Seal. To his dismay, Franklin's turkey was outvoted by a large margin. With the turkey’s ability to change the color of its head to red, white and blue by controlling blood flow to his head, maybe it would have been a good choice.

MISC. California’s wild turkeys now occupy about 18 percent of our state. Adult wild turkeys, can weigh upwards of 20 pounds. Turkeys can become aggressive during the breeding season, occasionally even charging, threatening, and acting aggressively toward people. If confronted by a wild turkey that has lost its fear of humans, an open umbrella may help steer it out of your path. (which of course I always carry with me when I go on hikes). The sex of a wild turkey or a flock can be determined by sign. Gobblers have a large track with a middle toe at least 4 inches in length; a hen has a middle toe less than 3 inches long. Turkey Poop Hen droppings are spiral shaped, but gobblers typically leave an elongated J-shaped dropping. (What an interesting study that must have been)
