Geocache Description:

At an old castle in West End.

"La Riviere", or Ingles Castle as it is known locally--sits alongside the New River in the City of Radford. The 10 room mansion was constructed by the grandson of Mary Ingles Draper in 1893. Prior, the extravagant mansion had been constructed but had burned down the night before the couple moved in. Blueprints were given to a contractor with the request that he re-build it on the same grounds to the same specifications.

Mary Draper-Ingles was captured in the 1700s by the indians. Her story is a part of local history in its own right.

Some locals claim that the castle is haunted by a ghost. Some say that it is Mary Draper-Ingles however, she never lived in the castle. There is a mirror over the fireplace inside the castle that has an image of a female seemingly burned into it. This is factual information. There is a mirror that has an image of what appears to be a female figure from a certain angle of viewing. Further research on this aspect revealed that a woman named Anne McClanahan Bass, who was a frequent house guest at La Riviere, had been searching for her cat in the house during one of her visits. That afternoon a bolt of lightning struck something nearby. The flash from the light off this lightning strike apparently seared the woman's image into the mirror she had been standing in front of. At this time, the mirror had been nearly new. The residents of the castle noticed a few days later that there was something not quite right with the mirror. The image of Anne McClanahan Bass was very clearly visible in the mirror.

Anne passed away in nearby Christiansburg at the home of a friend due to natural causes however, it is said that she supposedly haunts La Riviere. Her image burned into the mirror is still visible today inside the historic castle and is known as "The Lady In The Mirror".
