Geocache Description:

The cache is located near the Spruce Flats Wildlife Management Area, a short walk from Laurel Summit State Park in Forbes State Forest. The bog is one of the unique nature areas in WPa. For more info on the bog click HERE This cache is located in Forbes State Forest.

This is the second cache I have placed to draw your attention to this very rare and unique natural site. I had to replace the original Spruce Flats Bog Cache because of DCNR regulations requiring the removal of a cache after 3 yrs. to protect the environment around the cache. This requirement does not apply to the first stage of this cache but does apply to the second. I named it "Daughter of Spruce Flats Bog Cache" in honor of my daughter who introduced me to geocaching.

This cache is in Forbes State Forest

About 30 years ago I was biking in the Linn Run State Park Area. One of my fellow riders told me about "The Bog" located about 5 miles south of the Adam Falls parking area of Linn Run State Park.

After putting our bikes back on the car we drove up the mountain on Linn Run Rd to the Spruce Flats Bog. What a sight it was! Like nothing I had ever seen in WPa before. I returned several weeks later with my camera and took a dozen or so pictures, six of which I have displayed on my living room wall. I want to share with my fellow cachers the beautiful and yet unusual sight of Spruce Flats Bog so I have hidden this cache in that area.

The cache is multi-part with stage one in sight of the bog and the final stage along Spruce Flats Trail in Forbes State Forest. The hike to the bog is short and easy over a smooth level trail. The hike to Spruce Flats Trail begins with a hike down Wolf Rocks trail and is much longer and rougher (rocky) trail than the trail to the bog. The terrain is fairly flat along these two trails. The terrain difficulty is due to the very rocky parts of the trail.

You can find your way to Spruce Flats Bog and Wolf Rocks Trail by parking at Laurel Summit State Park which is about 6 miles south of the Adam Falls parking area in Linn Run State Park. You should take Linn Run Road most of the way up the mountain. Coordinates for parking are listed below. The trail to Spruce Flats Bog is near the restrooms.

Follow your gpsr to the bog and the first stage. (There is no need to leave the trail to find the first stage.) Enjoy the view while you take some pictures and search for this stage which will give you the coordinates for the final cache. Please use some stealth when looking for stage 1. There maybe other hikers around the area. Please return what you find there exactly the way it was found.

Once you have found the first stage follow your gpsr to Wolf Rocks Trail (no need to bushwack to the cache. Just go back to the parking lot to find the trail.) which will take you to Spruce Flats Trail and onto the final cache, a well hidden .30 cal ammo can along the Spruce Flats Trail. You will need to bushwack the last 50 to 60 feet to the cache.

A word of CAUTION: You will be in both a state park and a state forest. In both these places nature is left largely untouched. Before trying to search in any covered areas make sure that there are no animals or other dangers inside or around and that you do not destroy the natural beauty around you,

I would like to recommend a caches located in Linn Run State Park for you to do as well. It is: LEAH'S CACHE

You should also consider these caches located very near this cache:
G. ALEC STEWART MEMORIAL CACHE, WILDERNESS CACHE, BUCK CACHE and WOLF ROCKS CACHE - REDUX. Wolf Rocks Cache-Redux can be accessed from the same parking lot as this cache.

WARNING: Don't forget that during hunting season you are required to wear at least 250 sq in of blaze orange clothing by Pa Game Commission regulations. This is for your own safety.

Be aware that there might be an old and unreadable version of the clue to be found at stage 1 floating in the bog beyond your reach. Please ignore it unless you can somehow reach it and retrieve it and then dispose of it in one of the trash container along the trail. Thank you
