Geocache Description:

A cache to raise awareness of Coppull's history

Thanks to Rev. John Hudson for kindly giving permission to place this cache. Coppull Parish Church (known locally as Coppull OLD parish to distinguish it from St. John the Divine) is a beautiful brick built church with many interesting features. These include some fine stained glass windows and an altar given in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the 1914-18 war. The church is one of only a few which are not dedicated to a Saint. It has reportedly been in existence since 1094 although it is likely that the original location was further west than the current site. A new chapel was built in 1650 but by the early 1700's it had fallen into disuse and the building had become a stable. In 1758 the original chapel was pulled down and rebuilt in brick. By 1842 the Coppull chapel had become the parish church for Coppull, Charnock Richard and Welch Whittle. http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/a.dickinson/new_page_2.htm
