Ghost of the
Hermitage
The original and very popular Hermitage cache is no more.
It's broken and moldy remains are all gone. All that is
left is the distant echos of the wind whistling through its cracked
Tupperware container. The coachman is not the only ghost that
visits this place at night.
The
"Ghost of the Hermitage" cache has now moved in and taken
over.
Is this the Hermitage
cache ghost caught in this picture?
The Hermitage is located on the Headwaters Trail. It was built
by George Leith in 1855. Although now in ruins, the Hermitage and
its outbuildings have a storied past and formed the centre of a
magnificent 100-hectare estate. Some visitors say a ghost
still haunts the Hermitage. The ruins have been stabilized by the
Conservation Authority and are interpreted to the public at the
gatehouse museum located on the Orchard Trail. It displays
artifacts and a model of the mansion from ca. 1865.
Parking is available at N43 14.209 x W079 59.913. The
Hamilton Region Conservation Authority requires visitors to the
Dundas Valley to pay $3 per person walking or $6 per
vehicle. The Dundas Valley Conservation Area is open daily 8
a.m. to sunset, unless otherwise posted. This area is
closed to visitors at sunset, so don't attempt the cache within an
hour of dark.
For all those that have visited in the past, feel free to check
out the area again. This cache is still located near the
Hermitage ruins but in a new location. It's in a regular
camo'd container with a log book, pen, and small tradables.
Please return cache to its properly location and practice CITO
wherever possible. HCA permit obtained (GC Permit #09-03)
