As of
01/13/2012: This cache is still available!!!
However... I HIGHLY recommend you stop at the "Iron Ranger"
(address and coords listed below) when entering the Picayune Strand
State Forest (PSSF) and pick up information regarding the
Everglades restoration project that is under way. Please do
NOT enter any of the "closed" areas! They are being patrolled
and... being in these "closed" areas is a felony.
************************************************************
Cache is an ammo
can. In the rainy season you will probably want to wear boots
and bring plenty of insect repellent.
Located in Picayune Strand State
Forest, the cache area was formerly known as the entrance to "Bad
Luck". Up until just a few years ago, our family spent almost
every weekend here. Talk about good, clean, family fun! Did I
say "clean". Eh hmm...I meant muddy! ;) And we loved every second
of it. Riding the swamp buggy, camping, fishing, etc. It was so sad
to see an end put to some of those activities (namely riding the
swamp buggy). The gate didn't use to be here. Swamp buggies
and off-road vehicles would enter this path and follow it along the
canal until they arrived at the entrance of the "Prairie".
Once on the prairie, people would test the endurance of their
vehicles (especially during rainy season) to see if they could make
it to "The Sign", which is a billboard visible from US41. An
Everglades restoration project has since closed this area to
off-road vehicles. We think of our times in this area often
and enjoy coming here to just relax and reminisce. While you're out
here just think of how quiet it is. No TV or video games to
distract the kids. Fresh air. True nature. The kids have to
actually use their imaginations and physical activity...if they
don't want to be "bored". LOL
This is a picture of
our girls and our buggy taken many years ago during one of our
outings to "Bad Luck".
*****There is a good possibility you will
see/find Travel Bugs (TBs) and/or GeoCoins in this cache. If
you are not familiar with what these are or how to handle them
properly, please follow this link: How to use a
Travel Bug
There are a few other caches in the
area so be sure to check them out while you're here. Pack a lunch.
Bring your fishing pole. Enjoy your time away from the hustle and
bustle.
Congratulations to
"ecuadorable & JunglePete" on
FTF!!!
