Discovery
Park is the City of Seattle's largest park. Unfortunately, in
November 2007, the land managers banned geocaching due to concerns
about environmental impact, forcing the removal of several caches.
WSGA's Parks Advocacy Committee is working with Discovery personnel
in hopes of eventually getting geocaching restored as a permitted
activity.
Meanwhile, we want to show them that we are good land
stewards, so we are participating in Discovery's annual Beach
Cleanup, in which each volunteer group is given a stretch of beach
to - you guessed it - clean up. If you haven't seen Discovery's
beach, it really is spectacular, and the park itself is one of the
best places in Seattle to see wildlife.
So come on out and show them that geocachers love the land - and
have a great time, too!
Time and place: The CITO is 12:30 -4:00 Meet up at the
visitor center (coordinates above), at 12:30 pm for sign in.
Parks will sign us in and provide cleanup tools and, at about 1pm,
a van ride down to the beach. Folks who want to meet early for a
picnic are welcome to come anytime between 11 and 12:30
Cleanup efforts will be done by 4 pm and parks will provide van
rides back up to the visitor center. At that point the drawing for
swag will begin.
Swag?! Of course there will be swag! There will be a
drawing geogoodies once we get back to the visitor center. (If you
would like to donate swag, please
email me) Also, WSGA is
selling some neato CITO shirts this year. If you are interested,
check them out at the WSGA link below.
Caching? Well, there is no caching in the park, but there
are several nearby caches, and of course the CITO itself is a
cache.
Socializing? Before, after, and during the cleanup there
will be lots of socializing opportunity. Any folks that are
interested in an impromptu picnic and/or TB trading before the
cleanup are totally welcome bring a lunch and meet between 11ish
and 12:30 next to the visitor center.
This event is sponsored by the
Washington State Geocaching Association. If you are a
geocacher in the state of Washington, please join WSGA. See
