Geocache Description:

A short, but steep, walk off the highway.
Please use the pull off for the Historical Marker.

People starting to live in the Black Hills looked for a salt source close to the mining of gold in Deadwood and mining of coal in the now ghost town of Cambria. They found it in the salt springs of Salt Creek Canyon in July,1877. Even today, chloride caused white patches of ground can be seen on the bottom of the canyon south of the cache. From 1878 till the Cambria Salt Company was sold at a public bankruptcy sale in 1909, the spring's saline waters were pumped to various evaporation ponds for collection. The waters weren't salty enough to produce the amount of dry salt needed to justify the cost of production.
The salt waters still run today down the canyon starting in the valley below the cache site. Enjoy the soothing sound of water but watch your step getting to the cache. Steep ground may be slick when wet.
