Geocache Description:

Eighth in the "Plain Sight" series. Go hang out with Hoagie!

Man, I'm getting old! This little park like avenue used to be a road that was part of my bus route. Of course at that time you could drive clear around the Auditorium. Times have changed and this area has changed drastically with them. Hoagie Carmichael has always been a Bloomington icon. The old Gables ice cream shop (now a sandwich and wings place) over on Indiana avenue is somewhat famous for being where Hoagie sat and wrote his classic "Stardust". I think it was in 1979 I was working there making pizzas for some franchise outfit. That was some chain of pizza joints run by a couple of guys out of Champaign, Illinois. At the end of the evening we'd box up the left over slices and put them on top of the dumpster and a couple homeless guys would show up like clockwork and get a decent meal. The manager at the time got wind of this practice and set up a standing order that all pizza must be dipped in the mop water before being thrown out. What a prince of a guy! But yeah, at the time I was told the Hoagie story but I'd never heard of the guy. What a great tribute to a great composer and entertainer this statue is! Sort of like the Herman Wells statue at the other end of campus, this one provides room beside the subject to sit and get your picture taken. I would note that the entire statue is non-ferrous metal, and you're looking for a micro that's attached by a magnet. So (hint hint) lay off knocking around the statue! Just have a seat and take a load off. You can almost hear him composing. Of course, he's been gone quite a while, so I guess now he does more de-composing. (Sorry, couldn't resist...) The lid on this one is a screw cap thingy that's kind of tight but you should be able to get it open. You also might want to bring along a little forceps or little pliers (a la Redhawkk44p) to fish out the log. Stealth is going to be a huge issue with this one, so be mindful of the muggles. Good Luck! And thanks for looking.

Oh yeah! I forgot to put a little pencil in there so bring one!

Double oh yeah! Here's a couple links to some old Hoagie clips.
