Mockhorn Island Towers Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

offline.cacher: On Sept 2, 2010, Jim Bowman, Wildlife Biologist Manager for the Virginia Wildlife Management Areas sent me this email...

"Thank you for your inquiry. Virginia's wildlife management areas (WMA) were purchased using funds derived from hunting, fishing and trapping licenses, as well as contributions made by the Federal Assistance in Wildlife Restoration Program. As such, WMAs have been purchased and are managed for the purposes of habitat management and production of wildlife. Certain wildlife-related recreational acitvities are consistent and compatible with this objective, but not all outdoor recreation can be accomodated. As geocaching is not related to, nor does it support wildlife or habitat management, this activity is not allowed on our WMAs."

Unfortunately, this cache will have to be moved from the area.

Geocache Description:

A paddling cache on Virginia’s Eastern Shore

This cache is located on Mockhorn Island Wildlife Management Area.  Mockhorn Island is one of Virginia’s Barrier Islands and it is only accessible by boat.  The island is open to the public year round and primitive camping is permissible on the island.

The Barrier Islands of Virginia consists of 16 different islands which are owned by various organizations.  Most of these islands are protected and closed to the public.

The route to this cache is part of the Virginia Seaside Water Trail.  The route description to the cache can be found at the bottom of this link.

The launch point for this trip is from the Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge.  The route to the cache is about a 12 mile round trip.  It should go without saying that this trip should only be attempted by experienced paddlers.

The cache is located near 2 old World War II era watchtowers.  The towers were built as submarine watchtowers and to monitor artillery practice.  The towers can be seen from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel as you drive north over Fishermans Island.

The cache is a small otter box with a log and a FTF prize.  The box is large enough to accommodate small trackable items, but I doubt any item will move quickly from this location.

Congratulations to LegoFans for the FTF.
