Located at a scenic overlook with a view of New Melones Dam and powerhouse.
I am still researching the history of this overlook. I suspect the view was more dramatic before the new dam was built in the 70's. The trees have not been trimmed recently and the view of the powerhouse is somewhat obscured. The locked gate and sign are a result of national security since 9-11. I checked with the rangers at New Melones and was assured it is okay to walk or bike to the site. The round trip from the trailhead area will be a little over 2 miles. The cache is a small round storage container. Be sure to make a right turn at Baseline Camp (prison) rather than entering their parking lot. You will know when you have driven as far as you can and need to park and start hoofing it. The walk-through gate on the right at the parking area is hiking/equestrian access to trails over Peoria Peak and to Shell Road which is the access point for Table Mountain.
