Geocache Description:

Early settlers had problems with dingoes molesting their livestock. Some attempts were made by individual landholders to combat the problem by erecting vermin proof fences themselves.

Then in 1909 after a Vermin Board had been established at Loxton, it was decided to erect a fence around the boundary of the hundreds of Paringa, Gordon, Bookpurnong and Pyap with the River Murray forming the northern boundary.

The fence was 101 miles (162 km) long and cost 3,935 pounds and was completed by 1912.

It has been known locally as the ‘dog fence’ but it was never very effective at keeping the enclosed area free of dingoes, foxes or rabbits, was subject to high maintenance because of damage from fire, emus, cattle and sand drift and after only a few years the maintenance as a vermin proof fence was abandoned.

There are now only a few sections of the fence left to show what it was like. This portion of this roadside boundary fence is now not maintained by the adjoining landowner because the private land on the northern side of the fence is under a Heritage Agreement and therefore dedicated to flora and fauna conservation and consequently livestock are not permitted access.
